Description
The Albatros D.V entered service with the Luftstreitkrafte in 1917 and despite structural problems with the design 900 D.V and 1,600 D.Va were built.
The D.V was heavily criticised by Manfred von Richthofen who preferred the older version, the D.III. But the problems with the Fokker Dr.I and Pfalz D.III meant there was little choice but to keep the Albatros as a front-line fighter.
The D.V was armed with 2 x 7.92mm machine guns.
This example is an Albatros D.V of Jasta 15 1917.

In spite of the Red Baron's dislike, all Albatros D.V's and Albatros D.Va were later fitted with auxiliary struts on the bottom of the main "V" struts. All pilots were cautioned to beware of steep dives during dogfights. The Albatros D.V's and D.Va's continued fighting until the end of the war.
