The Grumman Avenger torpedo bomber entered service in 1942 and was one of the most successful aircraft of it's type in the war. The Avenger also saw service after the war in the observation and anti-submarine roles.
The Avenger was used by the US Navy, Marine Corps, Royal Navy, French Navy, Brazilian Navy, Canadian Navy, New Zealand Air Force, Netherlands Navy and the Japanese Defence Force.
The TBF-1/TBM--1 was armed with 3 or 4 x 0.5 inch machine guns, 1 x 0.3 inch machine gun, and 2,000 lb of bombs or 1 x Mk 13 torpedo. 8 x 3.5 inch rockets could also be carried.
This example is an TBM-3W of VS-881 Royal Canadian Navy circa 1958.
I think the effect of torpedo bombers of ships and subs was quite dramatic during the war, and having a radar-carrying version of the Avenger led to the formation of Hunter-killer groups after the war especially in Japan...
I can see back in Japan in 1950s and an Japanese pilot
that fought in the Pacific in WW2 seeing this on
an airfield near Tokyo and saying:
"I was shooting at those things off Okinawa..."
