The McDonnell-Douglas F-4 Phantom II entered service in 1960. It was originally developed for the US Navy, but saw service with the Marines, USAF, and a number of air forces throughout the world.

Many versions were made over the years, and production and modification programs continued until 1981 with over 5,000 made in total.

The Phantom II proved itself in the interceptor, ground attack, SEAD, and reconnaisance roles, and it's high power and large weapon carrying capacity were a big step forward from previous aircraft.

The F-4 is armed with 1 x 20mm Vulcan cannon (F-4E) 4 x AIM-7 Sparrow and 4 x AIM-9 Sidewinder short-range missiles, or a mixture of bombs, AMRAAMs, air-to-surface missiles, and British F-4s carried Skyflash also.

It is a testament to the strength of the aircraft that many are still in service round the world today.

This example is an FG1 of 43 Squadron RAF circa 1976.

Ah you are right... and wrong... the Marconi ARI 18228 radar warning receivers were fitted later on, and I will get to that when I have a minute... :)
:iconyuxtapuestoelmono:
They did?, i allways thought they had them in place since the beginning

:iconcadetkratt:
Wow, that is cool. Never knew the RAF had them.
:iconws-clave:
Yeah, there was a lot of defence budget cutting at the time, and the Navy had their carrier fleet slashed, so the RAF got their Phantoms... it was all a bit of a mish-mash later on as well when the RAF needed more Phantoms and had to get F-4Js from the USN which have the original J79 engines and not Rolls-Royce ones - So the RAF had FG1, (F-4K) FGR2 (F-4M) and the last batch which were called F-4J(UK) - confused yet? I know I am...
:iconcadetkratt:
Wow... I can only imagine how confusing it had to have been for a supply officer. It's why I'm trying to use aircraft that are similar rather than have a hodge podge of different engines and parts. Luckily, the DC-9-32's I'm looking at getting use the same engines as the 732 I'm also trying to lease.
:iconws-clave:
Yeah, I'll bet they kept those groups well apart... Ah, I just read that the F-4J(UK) was only used by 74 Sqn...
:iconcadetkratt:
Interesting. Would make more since to not mix aircraft, even though they did that during WWII.
