Gunstar is the fighting ship from the film The Last Starfighter.

Alex Rogan, a teenage arcade gamer from Earth is recruited to fight for the planet Rylos after getting the highest score on the game 'Starfighter'

The Ko-Dan manage to infiltrate and destroy all the Gunstars except one and it is up to Alex to save Rylos and Earth from the Ko-Dan fleet.

The Last Starfighter was released in 1984 and was a critical and commercial success.

Wow its a while since I saw that film, must be showing my age now. Still an exceptional ship design and a lot of people forget The Last Starfighter was the first film to make use of CGI or was it Tron. I can never remember they both came out around the same time.

I think they pushed the amount of CGI way beyond what had been done before - Tron came out in 82 and Starfighter in 84 - It's interesting that in the Wiki page on CGI, Starfighter is a 'commercial failure' when in fact it cost $15m and made $28m... and Tron also, which cost $17m and grossed $33m... If that's 'failing' then I want to 'fail' in business too...
