Description

The Mikoyan MiG-3 saw service in WW2 with the Soviet Air Force from 1940. It was a successful fighter despite some teething troubles with oil and fuel pumps at high altitude. It was very fast at high level - over 400mph, but due to battle conditions, was often forced into low-level and even ground attack roles which it was not designed for. The MiG-3 effectively went out of production when Mikulin discontinued it's AM-35 engine to concentrate on production of the AM-38 for the Shturmovik.

The MiG-3 was armed with 1 x 12.7mm, and 2 x 7.62mm machine guns. It was also adapted to carry rockets and bombs.

This example is of 34 IAP Soviet Air Force circa 1941.

I know on some aircraft the commander's plane was marked to standout. I like your notes on planes, etc. if you could explain sometimes what the camouflage was done the way it was. Are the dark wriggly lines for simulating ridges or something else. I really appreciate your work.
