Whirlwind 263 Sqn 5

Description

The Westland Whirlwind entered service in 1940 and was one of the most advanced fighters of the time.  It was an all-aluminium twin-engined  design but still not much larger than a Hurricane.

The Whirlwind saw combat both as a fighter and fighter-bomber and was more than a match for the Bf 109 and Fw 190 at low altitude.  Rolls-Royce cancelled the Peregrine engine and production ceased in 1942.

The Whirlwind was armed with 4 x 20mm cannon in the nose.  The fighter-bomber could carry a 250 lb or 500 lb bomb under each wing.

This example is Whirlwind Mk I of 263 Squadron RAF 1941.

Superb. I love this aircraft. Shame they never tried them with Merlins in all honesty. However it was understandable why they didn't with the Merlin in desperate need for the Spitfires and Hurricanes.
