Description
The Westland Wyvern was a Cold War Strike aircraft used by the Royal Navy in the 1950s. The production aircraft were powered by a gas turbine driving two contra-rotating propellors.
The Wyvern saw combat in the Suez Crisis of 1956, flying from HMS Eagle. It was fitted with an ejector seat, which was quite rare for propellor-driven aircraft. The Wyvern had a short life from 1953 to 1958, then it was replaced by jet aircraft.
The Wyvern was armed with 4 x 20mm cannon, and up to 3,000lb of external stores including rockets, bombs, or a torpedo.
This example is an S Mk 4 of 831 Naval Air Squadron 1955.
