Napier Railton 1933 by WS-Clave Napier Railton 1933 by WS-Clave
The Napier-Railton was built in 1933 by Thompson and Taylor for the record-breaking driver John Cobb.

It is powered by a Napier Lion W12 24 litre aircraft engine, has a 3 speed gearbox, and is capable of 168 mph. The fuel tank holds 65 gallons, and consumption is 5 mpg.

It holds the lap record at Brooklands, driven by John Cobb in 1935, achieving an average speed of 143 mph for the lap. This will stand in perpetuity as the Brooklands circuit is closed and the famous banking partly dismantled.

The Napier-Railton is still on display at the Brooklands Museum, and is in running order, with display runs being performed twice a year.

Very cool. I've seen the Napier-Railton a couple of times at Brooklands, though sadly I've never seen her running. She's a beautiful brute of a car, once seen never forgotten.

Beautiful job I remember having having the Autos in Profile of this one. The 24 litre engine always astonished my dad and me. The car eventually went on to test brake chutes for jets! I love this picture. Thanks!

Yeah, there were a lot of ex-aircraft engines around between the wars, it was a good source of power for record breakers. And I reckon they would all of those springs just to take the weight..

That's what I figured... heavy stuff for that time.

I like it! A nice change of pace from all the aircraft and a gorgeous car to boot. Maybe pair it up with a Blower Bentley?

Not a bad idea at all, though I do hate drawing spoked wheels now!

I dig your aeroplanes, probably most of all. But this is a great treatment of what must clearly be one amazing car.

Many thanks! :D

I hope to branch out now and then with a few interesting things - I do like record breakers though, like Bluebird, Spirit of America, Thrust 1 and 2, etc.

F*cking gorgeous car. Saw it at that circular track its at - (Brooklands?) a few years ago - what a beast. Also used to use it a lot in "Spirit of Speed 1937" - excellent game :D

Yeah, I have been impressed with this ever since I saw it at Brooklands in 2006 - I really want to get down there when they take it for a run...

Display runs twice a year! Awesome.

March of the Migs wear you down, eh?
Cool to see you dabbling in another genre of mechanical design. Of course, the aircraft engine keeps this hovering in the aviation arena. Still, hope you experiment some more. :D
